Help others to help themselves through agriculture in Nepal

Unfortunately the project hasn't met our fundraising goal.

Background

In Nepal, one of the poorest countries in the world, almost 70 percent of the population live off the land. The soil is actually quite fertile, but during the dry season very little grows, while during the monsoon season it rains so heavily that plants are swept away. Therefore, many farming families barely earn enough to survive. As a result, instead of going to school many children have to join their parents working in the fields. A total of 23 percent of all children leave school before gaining any qualifications; girls are forced to marry young because their families cannot afford their education. Faced with no other choice, each year thousands of parents have to leave their villages to go in search of work abroad. Their children are left behind and often receive inadequate care.
It doesn't have to be like this. Agricultural yields can be significantly improved with just a few extra resources. This is where the work of SOS Children's Village comes in.

Idea

Within the space of three years SOS Children's Village wants to help 200 farming families earn a livelihood that can safeguard their existence. This, in turn, will enable them to feed their children a healthy diet, look after them better and send them to school.
The following measures and methods have already proven successful in Nepal:

  • Thanks to the construction of greenhouses and irrigation systems, fruit and vegetables now grow all year round. This includes varieties that have been relatively scarce until now such as tomatoes, cucumbers and cauliflower, which can be sold for a better price outside the main season.

  • The cultivation of mixed crops and an assortment of varieties reduces the risk of losses due to pests.

  • Raised beds and sheeting protect the seedlings from pests and flooding.

  • Raised pens protect chickens and goats against damp and disease.

  • Manure and compost serve as good fertilisers, which provides an additional boost to yields.

  • Since the farmers store and sell their products en masse, all the money they earn goes directly to them.

Implementation

In the first year, 50 families on 12 model farms learn the new methods through brief, hands-on training. Following this, the local project team pays regular visits to the farms to support the families in putting what they have learned into practice. In the years that follow, an additional 50-100 farming families will be trained in the new methods so they can apply them for themselves.
